Hydrated Hyaluronic acid (HA) fragments (segments) self-assembly into a crystal matrix under the heat of the optical microscope. Each side of the square is ~10 micron. The segmented antiparallel and hierarchical fractal nature of the polymer can be seen in this image. This experiment by Dr. Turner was one of many performed at MIT that led to his biomatrixgenesis conjecture.
